Essex man wins Arable Farmer of the year

David Sunnucks who farms at Maydays Farm in Colchester Essex has been named the 2007 Farmers Weekly Arable Farmer of the Year, sponsored by GrowHow UK.
Sunnucks impressed the judges with his good knowledge of the DEFRA structure and his attempt to help all other local farmers. “I am a passionate farmer who likes to take all the opportunities thrown my way. I enjoy meeting people within the industry and I like be involved with all aspects of it,” he said.
Andrew Blake Farmers Weekly’s arable editor and one of the judges in this category commented: “Sunnucks is a very innovative farmer with his feet on the ground. He is prepared to look at all areas of crop production and involves his employees in all aspects of the business. This makes the farm as a whole a pleasure to visit.”
Over 100 farmers have entered in this year’s Awards with more than 30 businesses in the line-up reflecting the very best that British producers can offer across 12 categories.
The Awards’ aim is to recognise innovation and achievement among individual farmers as well as celebrate excellence within the industry.
In the run-up to the Awards, Farmers Weekly magazine is profiling the shortlisted farms from each category every week, with a focus on the three finalists competing for each award.
Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 31 October.
