Suffolk man shortlisted for Arable Farmer
of the Year

John Barrett of Sentry in Bungay, Suffolk.

The shortlisted companies in the 2007 Farmers Weekly Agricultural Awards have been named this week and up for Britain’s top Arable Farmer of the Year sponsored by Terra is John Barrett of Sentry in Bungay, Suffolk.

Barrett impressed the judges with his support for all the staff working on the farm and his good relationship with the business’ main buyers. “We focus on providing training and support to help the staff grow with the business,” he said.

Andrew Blake Farmers Weekly’s arable editor and one of the judges commented: “He educates local residents about all farming needs aiming for them to go away with a positive image towards British agriculture. He’s stepped back from physically trying to do the business to actually leading the staff and the business which makes the business well organised and more profitable.”

Over 100 farmers have entered in this year’s Awards with more than 30 businesses in the line-up reflecting the very best that British producers can offer across 12 categories.

The Awards’ aim is to recognise innovation and achievement among individual farmers as well as celebrate excellence within the industry.

In the run-up to the Awards, Farmers Weekly magazine is profiling the shortlisted farms from each category every week, with a focus on the three finalists competing for each award.

Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 31 October.
