Essex farmer wins Poultry Farmer
of the year

Paul Kelly of Kelly’s Turkeys in Danbury in Essex is the 2007 Farmers Weekly Poultry Farmer of the Year, sponsored by EB Equipment.
Kelly impressed the judges with his hands-on approach to running the business and his commitment to the whole poultry industry. “We are a farming company first and foremost. As soon as we move away from being a family farming business we lose a lot of that magic,” he said.
John Newton, ADAS senior poultry consultant and one of the judges commented: “Overall it has been a high standard of entry this year. You’re only judging on the edges of the competition and looking for small faults. I was very impressed with the standard of the entries.”
Over 100 farmers have entered in this year’s Awards with more than 30 businesses in the line-up reflecting the very best that British producers can offer across 12 categories.
The Awards’ aim is to recognise innovation and achievement among individual farmers as well as celebrate excellence within the industry.
In the run-up to the Awards, Farmers Weekly magazine is profiling the shortlisted farms from each category every week, with a focus on the three finalists competing for each award.
Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 31 October.
The overall Farmers Weekly Farmer of the Year will be chosen from one of the 12 category winners.
